고호가 빠리에 와서 그린
구두그림입니다.

빛을 향한 여정의
첫 귀착지 파리.

파리에서 그는
고향같은 평안함과 낯섬을
동시에 느꼈을 겁니다.

복음 전도자의 사명을 버리고 선택한 화가의 길.
순례자이면서 도피자의
심정이 공존했을 것도 같습니다.

많은 화가들과 만나면서
그는 다소 위안을 얻고
또한 실질적인 도움도 얻고
그림의 진전도 있었겠지요.

그러나 결국 파리에서도
그는 제대로 받아들여지지 못했던 것 같습니다.
생애 처음 안도감을 느낀 도시에서도
거부당했다고 느꼈을 것 같습니다.

사실, 빠리 초기의 그림인데도
이 그림은 이후의 삶과 그림들을 암시하듯
자신의 너덜거리고 낡아빠진 구두를 그렸습니다.
빠리까지 이미 피곤한 걸음이었다는
생각도 듭니다.

낡고 해어지고 아름다움이라곤 없는 구두.
아직도 네덜란드 시절의 어둠이
가시지 않은 이 그림을 보고 있노라면
눈물이 고입니다.
지금까지 걸어온 걸음의 피곤함과
앞으로 예정되어 있는 신산함이
구두 한켤레에 다 들어 있는 것 같습니다.

그러나 그는 그는 걸어갔습니다.
그의 그림을 다 그렸습니다.
그의 소명을 끝내었습니다.
